Aille Bay IRE 1791

Aille Bay has neither pedigree nor breeder recorded in the Irish stud book. All we can read is that she was a bay mare 12.3 hands high and born in 1954. Her owner, James Duffy, is the breeder of all her registered progeny and she seems to have had a long-term home in Barna.

In 1959 he first of Aille Bay's three daughters by Tiger Gill was born, Gill's Sandy Girl. She was exported to the USA before she was registered in Ireland and in the USA she had three foals with the Land Gate prefix. The youngest daughter, Land Gate Phoebe, was the dam of the stallion Greystone Creggan-Winter, who was used in both the USA and in Canada. In 1997 he was awarded the American Connemara Society's An Tostal trophy for his performance successes.

Fort Gill was born the year after her full sister. As a four-year-old she was the mother of her first registered daughter, Fort Hostess. Fort Hostess was exported to Sweden in 1967 and was first a brood mare at the Värnberg stud. In 1977 she was shown in hand with a fifth place and a modest bronze. Neither did her offspring take the show ring with storm, although her daughter Värnbergs Stella was awarded a silver and won her class at the local show at Gåsagård in 1976. No, Fort Hostess' main contribution as a brood mare is through her son Host, one of Sweden's most prominent eventing ponies in the nineies. No less than nine times was he among the top ten eventing Connemaras in Sweden and four times among the top ten eventing ponies, all breeds. In 1995 he was ranked as number two of the eventing ponies of all breeds. Host also has an individual bronze ad the Swedish championships, a team gold from the Nordic championships and double team golds from the European championships. Host represented Sweden at the European pony eventing championships no less than four times, with and individual sixth place as his finest result.

Rousette is perhaps the one of Fort Hostess daughters who left the biggest impression in Sweden. Her son Rimble won his class with 39 p when shown in hand as a three-year-old. During the first decade of the millennium he competed successfully in show jumping and he also won the gold at the local eventing championships one year. Also Rousette's son Buffalo Stanse has taken competition points in show jumping as has the daughter Roseanne. Before Roseanne began life as a show jumper she was the mother of Lill-Ruben who between 2000 and 2014 earned show jumping points ever year. During the early first millennium Lill-Ruben was among the topp 100 Swedish show jumping ponies for three consecutive years. Lill-Ruben's half brother Lindens Angus has been a successful dressage pony and Lindens Petroc won his class at the 2008 Swedish national show. In 2020 Lindens Kira could be seen at the only Connemara in-hand show where she was awarded 37 points.

Fort Hostess' branch of the Aille Bay family must be considered modest. Fort Gill's other daughters, however, have given rise to a massiv family, far too large to be explored in detail, but let us make an overview at least.

Fort Daisy was the dam of Fort Cora who in the early seventies won her class att Clifden show twice, was second once and third once. Fort Cora was the dam of Fort Cora 2nd and granddam of Moy Rusheen Mist, second at the Royal Dublin Show and Champion Ridden Pony at Clifden show in 1991. Moy Rusheen Mists nephew, the stallion Deise Sam Maguire, was third at Clifden show and later exported to the Netherlands where his daughters have earned titles such as best tree-year-old mare and best foal. Aran Colleen was exported to Belgium where she has numerous descendants at the Klover Hill stud. One of them, Dancing queen de Klover Hill, was youngstock champion at the Belgian inspections in 2011. Aran Collens progeny Aran Joan and Whispering Wind were both exported to Sweden, but I haven't been able to find any traces of them here. From Fort Cora 2nd we also find the Swedish exports Drumpass Queen and Aran Jessica, whose daughter L'tara's Jenny was third in one of the ridden classes at the 2019 Clifden show. Another daughter of Aran Jessica's, Little May was Ridden Champion at the 2018 Oughterard show.

In addition to Fort Cora 2nd, Fort Cora was the dam of Fort Pam, placed third at Clifden show and later exported to Denmark. In 2004 I met the then 18-year-old Fort Donna, a daughter of Fort Pam's full sister Fort Karina, in her new home land, Scotland. She had her last foal at her side, Chesterhill Dotterell, and her back was by then rather lowered. Donna's son Goosemoor Duncan won his class at the 1997 British breed show and later passed as a stallion. He's the sire of among others Skellorn Harrison, who has numerous successes ridden and in hand.

Fort Heather is another of Fort Karina's daughters and she was exported to Belgium. At the Quatre Chemin stud she was the dam of Lolita des Quatre Chemins, the best two-year-old filly in 2009. Fort Heather's Irish granddaughter Kippaunagh Lass, was instead third in the Clifden show ridden classes in 2017. From Fort Heather's sister Fort Sara we find the Swedish expport Battlestown Buster who had a successful year in 2019 competing in dressage. Fort Sara's grandson, Myshall Rodge, began his career with a second place at the loose jumping finals at Clifden show, as a three-year-old in 2009. Twelve years later he helped win a team bronze for Ireland at the European pony eventing championships. Rodges half brother Bebo.com has been a successful show jumper and represented Denmark at the European pony show jumping championships in both 2015 and 2018. A daughter of Fort Sara, Fort Lisa, was exported to the UK where she competed successfully in ridden classes.

Following Fort Hostess and Fort Daisy, Fort Gill's third registered daughter, Carraminna Girl, was born in 1968. From her we find among others the half brothers Monivea Boy, placed third in a ridden class at Clifden show, and Monivea Independent, placed second in the 2015 Clifden gelding class. We also find Maghera Lady, who was third in the 2012 Clifden loose jumping finals while Diamond Kim has been placed third in hand. Diamond Kim's son, Dappled Diamond, was exported to Sweden and competed successfully in show jumping a couple of year, but was unfortunately never registered in Sweden. From this branch of the Aille Bay family we also find in Sweden Stripe Leann, one of the many Connemaras earning competition points in show jumping in 2019, and Dawn Star, who won her class with a silver at a local pony show in 2019.

Fort Gill's fourth and final registered daughter was Rockmount Trini, born in 1975. Her daughter Aille Rockie was exported to Austria where her stallion son, Silver Rock, sired among others A.C. Silver Stream, a successful eventing pony.

Having seen the massive branch of the family Fort Gill founded one would expect a lot from her younger sisters. However, neither of them made any major impact. Feileog, born in 1964 was exported to Denmark and the Holen stud as a two-year-old. According to the Danish stud book she lost her foal on multiple occasions and only seems to have had two live foals. Her daughter Holens Francisca had six Connemara foals, but neither of them had any descendants since the early nineties. The part bred Chenet found his way to Sweden and earned show jumping points here in 2007. Apart from this I haven't been able to find anything on the descendants of Aille Bay's other daughters, but the numerous descendants of Fort Gill have of course ensured that the family remains well represented in their native country.
